Victory over Tesco welcomed

Celebrations as company admits defeat over London Road plans

Greens in St Albans have welcomed the news that Tesco have abandoned plans for a superstore on London Road.

After years of campaigning by local residents, and defeat of the planning application, the multinational has finally said they will not be building a supermarket on the site.

The Green Party were the first in St Albans to come out against the planned Tesco store, in support of local residents. The main fears were that the store would worsen local traffic conditions, and damage local businesses.

The Greens were also the first to survey local attitudes to the proposed store, finding that 95% of local residents opposed the plans.

Questions remain about what will happen on the London Road site. Tesco has said it is talking to its development company, and to the council, about what to do with it.

Popular ideas for the site include a mixed development of housing and leisure, or a new primary school.
