Greens become third party in St Albans

June elections: Greens won more votes than Labour across St Albans district.

With 5074 votes to Labour's 4236, the Green vote was 11% across the district, an increase of 6 points on the last county elections in 2005. Labour came fourth in eight out of the district's ten electoral divisions.

In neighbouring Watford, Greens retained their county council seat. Across the Eastern Region, Greens held their three county council seats and won an additional eight.

St Albans Greens' best result was in Central St Albans, where Simon Grover managed 18%. Mr Grover pointed to support in St Peter's ward being even higher than that.

Mr Grover said: "The close analysis we did of the results shows that within St Peters ward we have huge support, as a result of our work in that part of Central St Albans. Here and all round the country, when people see what the Green Party can do for them, they come out and vote for us.

"The party's big vote increase in the European elections backs up the view that people are turning to us as the party with a positive message, as the party they can trust."
