New tests reveal widespread pollution over legal limits

9 January 2018

St Albans Greens have completed a third round of air quality testing in St Albans, and the results show action is urgently needed.

The locations were suggested by local residents as potential pollution hot spots. We used diffusion tubes to measure nitrogen dioxide. The tubes were professionally analysed, and revealed that in most of the locations pollution was above the legal limit of 40ugm
-3 - see map. Near Sumpter Yard on Holywell Hill, two tubes showed readings of 105ugm-3.

The two high readings were retested by the laboratory, to check they were correct - and the readings were confirmed as accurate.

Greens have drawn up a 10-point Clean Air Plan for the city. These results show the need for strong action is needed more than ever.
